The Avondale Meadows Middle School is a public, tuition-free charter school open to all Indiana students, regardless of income-level, academic background, and/or residence. Our goals are to provide the following:

  • Ensure that each child becomes a motivated and capable learner.
  • Acquires the essential knowledge and skills needed to compete in an increasingly competitive world.
  • Builds character and makes choices that will result in a better life for themselves and others.
  • Has the active involvement of parents, mentors, and the community throughout the educational process.
  • Benefits, not detracts from society.

To apply:

AMMS is non-selective and open to all applicants. When there are more applicants to our school than available spots, we are required to conduct a lottery or random selection of students to be awarded seats in our school. We strongly encourage families to apply during our open enrollment period in order to have the best chance of being awarded a seat in our school. Open enrollment begins at 7:30 a.m. on February 20, 2017 and ends on April 17, 2017 @ 4:00 p.m. When open enrollment ends, applications are counted. Again, if there are fewer applications than openings, all applications will be accepted. If there are more applications than openings, a lottery will be held.

The lottery is a random selection to determine who will be accepted and who will be placed on a waiting list. It will be held at 4:00 p.m. on April 20, 2017 in the AMA conference room. Preference is given for any available openings to siblings of students already enrolled. Parents will be notified by mail of the lottery results during the week of April 24, 2017. Applications received after open enrollment are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis for any remaining openings or put on a waiting list.

If Your Child is on a Waiting List:

You will be notified of acceptance by mail or phone if an opening becomes available for your child. Please make sure you notify AMMS immediately if your contact information changes after you have turned in your application.

To Enroll:

If your child has a spot in our school for the ’17-’18 school year, you must attend a New Family Orientation on Saturday, June 3, 2017. Orientation information will be sent out with your letter of acceptance. Parents must submit to the school all of the following items by the date specified in the letter: completed registration packet, original birth certificate, and the most recent immunization records. If these are not received by that date, your child may be removed from the school’s accepted list.

Important Notes:

  • Your child must be in attendance on the first day of school.
  • Please notify the office if you do not intend to send your child to Avondale Meadows Middle School.
  • It is your responsibility to notify the school of address and/or phone number changes. If we are unable to reach you because of wrong address or phone – your child’s name will be removed from our list.
  • Each application is valid for one school year only. Students enrolled do not need to apply for future years.

At Avondale Meadows Middle School, we offer a strong Core Knowledge curriculum which compliments Indiana’s Academic Standards and Common Core Standards. This curriculum is integrated with and supported by enVision Mathematics and Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop.

Core Knowledge is a curriculum that provides a broad base of knowledge and the rich vocabulary needed for reading achievement and academic success. The program consists of three C’s. Visit http://www.coreknowledge.org/ for more information.

  1. Coherent- Identification of what children should learn at each grade level ensures a coherent approach to building knowledge across all grade levels.
  2. Cumulative- Core Knowledge provides a clear outline of content to be learned grade by grade so that knowledge, language, and skills build cumulatively from year to year. This sequential building of knowledge not only helps ensure that children enter each new grade ready to learn, it also helps prevent the repetitions and gaps that so often characterize current education.
  3. Content-Specific-Core Knowledge clearly specifies the important knowledge in language arts, history, geography, math, science, and the fine arts.

enVision Math includes daily Problem-Based Interactive Math Learning followed by visual learning strategies that help deepen conceptual understanding by providing visuals for students. It includes daily problem solving and common core review. Built into the program are various interventions for students as well as enrichment opportunities based on the student’s needs.

Writer’s Workshop is an approach to writing instruction that addresses the needs of all students in the class. Writers’ Workshop begins with a mini-lesson where the teacher models the process and conventions of writing. After the mini-lesson, students write independently for an extended period of time. During independent writing, the teacher meets with individual students or groups of students to help them with their writing. Finally, Writers’ Workshop ends with a share time where students discuss and share their writing with their classmates.

Reader’s Workshop is similar to Writer’s Workshop and begins with a mini-lesson where the teacher directly instructs the class based around a specific strategy or skill. After the mini-lesson, students engage in a variety of literacy based activities. Students are participating in independent reading as well as activities focused on comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary.
